HERE’S THE SCOOP: CORNISH ICE CREAM PRODUCER ANNOUNCES RECORD PRODUCTION RISE
A 120-year-old Cornish ice cream producer is announcing a record rise in production levels, which have doubled in the last five years and increased tenfold over the past decade.
In the last 12 months, Bodmin based Kelly’s of Cornwall has produced over 14.5 million litres of its much loved clotted cream ice cream, a rise of 500,000 litres year on year. That’s enough to give every single person in the UK (63 million) two scoops of ice cream each!
This means, Kelly’s of Cornwall is now the UK’s 6th biggest ice cream brand, growing twice as fast as the total ice cream market.
Kelly’s, which has been making ice cream in Cornwall for over 120 years, was acquired by R&R Ice Cream in 2008. Thanks to this, Kelly’s is no longer a secret just for the Cornish; it is now available countrywide, sold in supermarkets up and down the UK for everyone to enjoy.
To meet this additional demand, ice cream production has increased by over 130%. This is good news for ice cream lovers and good news for Cornwall. As Paul Harrold, the general manager at Kelly’s ice cream factory in Bodmin, says, “The numbers of permanent factory floor staff have almost doubled and we have also been able to launch a new training initiative to implement apprenticeships in various skills, increasing the skill sets of our staff.
“We are also very proud that we only use Cornish milk and Cornish cream, sourced from Trewithen Dairy, which has been able to grow its business alongside ours.”
Trewithen MD Bill Clarke adds, “We are delighted to be supplying Kelly’s of Cornwall with Cornish cream and milk. Since 2010, the amount of cream and milk we supply has increased by roughly 23%, which is good news for our dairy and for the local Cornish farmers who produce our milk. We currently deliver Kelly’s with about 17,000 litres of cream and milk per day.”
Since the acquisition, R&R has made a significant investment in its marketing program, launching a nationwide marketing and advertising campaign (covering TV, print and digital) to help drive awareness of the Kelly’s brand outside of the county.
It is Britain’s leading brand of Cornish ice cream and the only genuine Cornish ice cream available nationwide through the multiples. Kelly’s combines traditional methods with modern processes to give the product its distinctive rich and creamy taste.
